Root Treatment and Retreatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?

It is the process of removing a small thread-like tissue located in the center of the tooth, that is, the pulp. When damaged, diseased or dying pulp is removed, the remaining space is cleaned, smoothed and refilled. With this process, the root is closed. After the condition of the tooth is determined by your dentist and root canal treatment is recommended, treatment is started by an endodontist and the treatment can be done in one or several sessions depending on the condition of the tooth. First, the treatment will be anesthetized so that you do not feel any pain. Then, if there is any decay, it is cleaned and the tooth is opened from the crown part to reach the area where the nerves of the tooth are located.

The length of the canal is determined by taking a radiography (x-ray). The contents of the root canals (pulp tissue) are removed and cleaned, and the root canals are shaped using various hand tools and rotary tools. The root canals are disinfected, that is, they are cleared of bacteria, and the canals are filled with a material compatible with the surrounding tissues. Treatment may take between 1 and 3 sessions depending on the condition of the tooth. Especially in cases where the tooth is not alive and there is inflammation at the root tip, medication can be placed in the root canals to destroy bacteria. In order for this medicine to have an effect, it must remain in the canals for at least 5-7 days. During this period, the tooth is closed with a temporary filling material. In cases of severe inflammation, the dentist may also recommend oral medication.

After the treatment, complaints of mild pain and sensitivity in the tooth may occur, but this is temporary. In this case, the best solution is to not use the side where that tooth is located for a few days. After a short time, it will be seen that the sensitivity disappears. A root canal treated tooth can last for years just like a tooth that has never been treated. Root canal treated teeth, like any other tooth, may develop decay or fracture and may cause gum problems. Oral hygiene should be paid attention to after root canal treatment. You need to brush your teeth regularly, floss and go to your doctor for a check-up.

What is Retreaction?

Retreatment in endodontics; It is the re-treatment of teeth that have previously had root canal treatment but failed for various reasons.

Root canal treatment is a complex treatment. There are many factors that affect success. Our teeth show many variations such as the number of root canals, the shapes and lengths of these canals, and the presence of side canals in addition to the main canal.
