Gum Diseases
The most complained about and also the most common problem in our society is tooth decay. Many teeth that are not treated early are lost due to tooth decay. However, tooth loss is not only due to tooth decay but also as a result of gum diseases.
In fact, gum diseases that cause tooth loss inside the mouth cause tooth loss at least as much as tooth decay.
When we smile, two points in the mouth attract attention. One of these is the teeth and the other is the gums.
Gums are pink-looking organs that surround the crown, which is the visible part of the tooth, and are supported by the alveolar bone, which surrounds the root part of the tooth.
It forms the integrity of the tooth in the mouth and supports it. It is an indispensable organ especially for us dentists who aim for a beautiful smile. Healthy gums are light pink in color. It is tightly adhered to teeth and bones and has a shiny and rough appearance similar to orange peel.
In some cases, even healthy gums cover too much of the tooth (gummy smile). Gum tissue is not diseased or unhealthy. It just covers too much of the tooth. In such cases, the gum will be surgically cut and will have a more aesthetic, more pleasing and healthier appearance.
Especially the gums, which are the most important organ of smile design, must be in a healthy structure in order for our patients to have the beautiful smile they desire. Just as the teeth undergo certain treatments to make them whiter, larger and more prominent when the patient smiles, gums also have a very important place in smile design.
The expectation in smile design is to achieve the golden ratio. The golden ratio consists of the shaping of organs in certain proportions in many parts of our body. Our oral organs also need to show the golden ratio between other organs of our body when smiling. Thanks to this ratio, our gums complement the teeth to a certain extent. Thus, when a person smiles, how much teeth and gums will be visible and how they complement each other will be very important both in terms of health and aesthetics.
